Bill Gates to Fund New Approach to Alzheimer’s Research

The early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease has remained elusive. It is generally possible to slow the progress of the disease with early diagnosis, giving patients more time to make their plans. Billionaire Bill Gates is donating money for research to make early diagnosis simpler, according to The New York Times in "What if You Knew Alzheimer's Was Coming for You?"

Gates wrote on his blog that several men in his family had gotten Alzheimer's and that he was at risk of getting it.

Gates believes a new approach is needed to combat the disease and would like to see a simple diagnostic method developed, such as a blood test.

Gates is contributing $100 million to fund Alzheimer's research.

Some people might be tempted to see self-interest in Gates' call.  However, that is beside the point.

Alzheimer's is a serious problem and will continue to be so, until a cure is found.
